India and New Zealand lock horns in the first of the three-match T20 series on Wednesday, 17th November 2021. The series will mark the start of Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid Era in T20 internationals. Virat Kohli is no longer the captain of the team in T20 internationals. Rohit Sharma has taken over the captaincy, while KL Rahul will be the vice-captain.
For the upcoming three-match T20 series, Virat Kohli has been rested and Ishan Kishan is likely to play at number three position. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are expected to be the openers, while the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Venkatesh Iyer will make their presence felt in the middle-order.
Hardik Pandya has been dropped from the squad and Venkatesh Iyer is likely to fill his shoes in the playing XI. Also, Rahul Chahar and Varun Chakravarthy, who were in the T20 World Cup squad, have been excluded from the squad.
Ravichandran Ashwin is likely to share the spin bowling duties alongside Yuzvendra Chahal, who marks his return in the T20 squad. Senior pacers such as Jasprit Bumrah and M Shami have been rested in the series. In their absence, the likes of Harshal Patel, Deepak Chahar, and M Siraj would look to capitalize on the opportunity.
New Zealand, on the other hand, played their last T20 international on Sunday in what was the final match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Unfortunately, they lost the game and failed to win their first-ever T20 World Cup title. New Zealand haven’t got a lot of time to process as they are set to face India in a three-match T20 series.
In a big development, Kane Williamson has opted to rest and Tim Southee would lead the team. The squad is much similar to the one played in the T20 World Cup. New Zealand have a weak batting unit as they will miss two key players such as Williamson and Conway. The team would be banking on the likes of Daryl Mitchell, Martin Guptill, and Glenn Phillips to perform well with the bat.
There is no denying that bowling is their strongest suit. They have three top-class fast bowlers in Tim Southee, Trent Boult, and Lockie Ferguson. As for the spin, NZ will continue to bank on the likes of Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi.
