"Heavenly and Heroic"- these two adjectives really define Harmanpreet Kaur's might as leader of the India Women's Cricket Team. There is no doubt that Harmanpreet Kaur has a lot of credit for transforming the India Women's team into a dominating side.
Harmanpreet Kaur is often considered an aggressive captain and she was also compared to Virat Kohli at the start of her early career. As a result, she has been also caught in various controversies due to her aggressive behavior on the field. However, Kaur is undoubtedly one of the best skippers who have captained India Women to date.
Kaur is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm off-spinner. However, she is a batting all-rounder and bowls only occasionally. Kaur is the skipper of India Women in all three formats and has achieved a lot of success under her leadership.
Early and Personal Life
Harmanpreet Kaur was born to parents Harmandar Singh Bhallar and Satwinder Kaur on March 9, 1989. She grew up with her sister Hemjit Kaur and two brothers in Mogra City in Punjab.
Her father worked in a court while her mother was a homemaker. His father also used to play volleyball and basketball. She drew inspiration to become a cricketer from her father, who once aspired to become a cricketer.
Domestic Career
Harmanpreet Kaur underwent coaching at the start under childhood coach Kamaldeesh Singh Sodhi and used to play with boys. She moved to Mumbai in 2014 after she found a job in Indian Railways. With her impressive show for Railways, she got a chance to play for India in 2009.
International Career
In March 2009, Harmanpreet Kaur made her international debut in an ODI match against Pakistan under then-skipper Jhulan Goswami. Later in June, she also made her T20I debut in a clash against England Women. In 2015, she played her first Test match for India against England Women.
So far, Harmanpreet Kaur has played 6 Tests, 113 ODIs, and 170 T20Is for Team India. She has slammed over 3500 runs in ODIs and over 3300 runs in T20Is. She also accounts for 7 centuries in international cricket as of July 2024.
Kaur captained Team India in some crucial tournaments when legends Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj were not available. When these two players bid goodbye to the sport, Kaur was handed over the leadership across all three formats.
Franchise Career
The right-handed batswoman has been quite active in franchise leagues and is one of the Indian players who is often offered lucrative contracts in foreign leagues. She has played in tournaments like Women's Big Bash League and The Hundred.
When the Women's Premier League commenced in India in 2023, she was picked by Mumbai Indians franchise for Rs. 1.80 crores. She led the team to the title in the debut season and was retained by the franchise for the 2024 season too.
