BIO:
Spectacular Batsman! If you are a Millenial or Genz kid, you won't understand the legacy of Sunil Gavaskar in Indian cricket. For the young kids, consider him as powerful as Sachin Tendulkar or Virat Kohli of the 70s and 80s era.
Sunil Gavaskar is a former Indian legendary batsman and captain. He was the first batsman to smack 10,000 runs in international cricket. He was an opening batsman who was part of the Indian team that won the ICC ODI World Cup 1983 under Kapil Dev.
Family and Personal Life:
Sunil Gavaskar was born in Mumbai on July 10, 1949 to Manohar and Meenal Gavaskar. He grew up with his sisters Nutan and Kavita in his childhood and went on to become one of the best batters for India from the Mumbai region.
Early and Domestic Career- 1
Sunil Gavaskar was part of the Bombay domestic team since his childhood and went on to play for the same side till 1982. He also played one season for England County Somerset. After consistent shows for the Mumbai team for a few years, the little master finally made his international debut in 1971.
International Career:
Sunil Gavaskar's dream finally became a reality in 1971; when he was picked by the national team in March during an away tour in West Indies.
He grabbed the limelight in his 1st Test series itself, hitting 774 runs in 4 games at an average of 154+. He slammed 4 centuries and 8 half-centuries across his 8 innings and this is still the record for most runs by a batter in a Test series.
From 1971 to 1987, Gavaskar went on to play 125 Tests and 108 ODIs for the side. He added 10122 runs in 214 innings in the longest format with 34 tons and 45 fifties.
In 108 ODIs, he slammed 3092 runs with 1 century and 27 half-centuries. He also shattered 4 double tons for the side in Tests with a top knock of 236. Notably, Sunil Gavaskar also bowled in 33 international games across both formats and got 1 wicket.
