IND vs SA: Wasim Jaffer Makes Bold Statement, Says Shreyas Iyer Will Lose His Place When Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav Will Return

Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has said that the star batter Shreyas Iyer will lose his place in the squad when Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav return to the India National Cricket Team.

Shreyas Iyer has been batting at the No.3 spot for India in the five-match T20I series against South Africa in the absence of regular No.3 Kohli, who has been rested, and middle-order batsman Suryakumar, who has been ruled out of the series after suffering an injury.

Iyer, who has scored 319 T20I runs in 2022, is India’s second-highest run-getter in T20Is in 2022, just behind Ishan Kishan. So far in three T20I games against South Africa, he has registered the scores of 36 (27), 40 (35) and 14 (11).

Meanwhile, Jaffer said that Suryakumar will walk back into the team once he is fit and Kohli will take back his No.3 spot whenever he plays.

“I think, yes. Suryakumar Yadav, if he’s fit, walks into Team India and Virat Kohli will be back at No. 3 as well so unless he shows really great form, Shreyas Iyer will lose his spot,” Jaffer said during an interaction with ESPNcricinfo.

Wasim Jaffer Has His Say On India’s Third Opener For T20 World Cup 2022

Youngsters Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad are fighting for the third opener’s spot in the Indian T20I team. Jaffer feels that both the players could be in India’s World Cup squad for two different roles. He asserted:

“Yes, they will be candidates. When KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma return, Ishan Kishan could perhaps be a backup wicketkeeper after Rishabh Pant and Gaikwad [could be there too]. You take 18-20 players so perhaps both could be there.”

While talking about India captain Rishabh Pant, who has registered the scores of 29,5 and 6 in 3 T20Is against South Africa, Jaffer said that Pant just needs more clarity. He stated:

“His game is completely suited to T20s, he just needs a bit better clarity and a bit better approach to his game. The more matches he plays, the better he’ll get.”
