Aaron Finch did not have a T20I series to remember against Sri Lanka. Australia won the series 5-1 with the visitors winning the last and final game on February 20th. The Lankans headed into the game, looking to avoid a whitewash and they managed to so do.

Aaron Finch meanwhile had a tough time throughout the series scoring just 78 runs in the five games. Finch’s form has often been the talking point regarding his overall game. When in full flow he is one the hardest batsman to bowl to, while he takes a lot of time to get back into form.

Matthew Wade, whose unbeaten 43 went in vain in the final game has backed the T20I skipper to open the batting in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia. They will be defending the title at home and Wade believes that Finch can still open the batting despite this series against Sri Lanka where he did not bat well.

In his last 17 T20I innings, Finch reached fifty just once and has nine single-figure scores with a strike rate of just 111.

“Finchy is a class player and I’ve heard people questioning where he’s at. He averages 40 and strikes at 140 for a reason. He’s the captain of our team and the questions are always going to come when you get a little bit older and you don’t do well in one series.

“They’re class players for a reason and the best we’ve had in T20 cricket ever, and I don’t expect any change at the top of the order, to be honest. So those two will be there in the World Cup. I’m confident in that and when the big game comes they will nail it,” said Wade about his T20I skipper.

The southpaw recently bagged an IPL contract with Gujarat Titans ahead of the 2022 season. The franchise roped him in for 2.4 crores at the mega auction. He said that he is looking forward to his stint and is ready to bat anywhere in the tournament.

“I haven’t spoken to them exactly about what my role will be, but I would assume anywhere from opening down to seven I’m pretty comfortable with. It doesn’t worry me too much. If middle-order comes my way, then it’s another opportunity to get some game time in and play that role,” Wade said.
