Sanju Samson is included in the Indian T20I squad that has been named for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. Both teams play three T20Is followed by three ODIs between January 3-15. The three T20Is will be played on January 3, 5, and 7 followed by the three ODIs on 10, 12, and 15.

Sanju Samson however has not found a place in the ODI squad. The Kerala keeper-batter played his last T20I for India against West Indies and his last ODI against the Kiwis in November earlier this year. Samson has been in and out of the Indian white-ball squads for a while now and Rajasthan Royals coach Kumar Sangakkara spoke about what he needs to do when he gets his opportunities against Sri Lanka.

Talking to Star Sports, Sangakkara spoke about how exactly should Samson approach the series with the bat.

“The one thing he shouldn’t do is think that this is his final chance to prove his mettle and try and be desperate to succeed. He’s got every single thing going for him. He’s a wonderful young man, he’s got skills and temperament. Let it settle, don’t fight it, make sure you’re adjusting to what comes at you on the day. And then, go out there and enjoy the way he plays” said the former Sri Lankan cricketer.

Sangakkara further said that Samson will play at his best if he is allowed to bat in the lower-middle order. The right-hander finished a few games for India batting at number six and seven earlier this year for India.

“He might have to bat outside position depending on where they want him to fit in. Whether he’s batting at the top or lower-middle order at 5 and 6, he’s got the game, the power, the touch, the placement and the mentality to do really well.”

Samson has played 10 ODIs this year scoring 284 runs at an average of 71.00. In six T20Is in 2022, he has scored 179 runs averaging 44.75.
