The Ashes 2021-22 is set to commence on December 8 at the Gabba in Brisbane, a venue which the Australians would hold up as their pride not before they lost their first game to India in 32 years.

Australia are the current holders of Ashes after they drew 2-2 in 2019 in England to retain the urn. Australia had blanked England 4-0 in the 2017/18 series at home.

Without a doubt, Ashes is the highest echelon of Test cricket and for any player from both sides to put up a big show is like creating a mesmerising point of his career.

There are many close battles that went down to the wire like the one in Headingley Leeds when Ben Stokes played one of the strongest knocks in Test cricket.

A batter’s ability is determined by how he can absorb the pressure of the field and hold patience to score a truckload of runs. Test cricket allows the batter to take his time and escalate his innings accordingly.

Even if most of us might have never seen him bat, still we cannot deny that Sir Donald Bradman is the best batter of the game without any argument.

With 5028 runs, Bradman remains as the highest run-scorer of Ashes and his batting average of 99.94 was the highlight of his career. His record of most runs in Ashes will be an arduous task for any player and at least for another five years it will remain intact.

Let us look at the batters from Australia and England amongst the active international players to have the most runs in Ashes.

5 current players with the most Ashes runs

5) Stuart Broad: 899

Well if you are wondering that maybe you have come in the wrong list, then don’t worry you are not under any delusion.

Broad has been playing for England since 2006 and has accumulated 3370 runs in his bag with 13 half centuries and a hundred against Pakistan. He has scored four half-centuries against Australia with the highest score being 65.

4) Ben Stokes: 921

Stokes magnificent 135* against Australia in Leeds during the 2019 Ashes at home will be a harrowing memory for the Aussies. He scored 441 runs from 10 innings in that series and was the second highest run-getter behind Steve Smith (774).

His return to England’s squad for the Ashes Test series in Australia has boosted the morale of the team and also strengthened their chances to compete against their nemesis.

3) David Warner: 1615

Warner played his first Ashes match at the Old Trafford in Manchester in the 2013 Ashes in England. He scored 120 runs from three games in his debut Ashes series.

Warner has scored 1615 runs against England from 23 Test matches at an average of 39.39 including 12 fifty-plus scores and three centuries.

However, Warner had a lean patch in the last edition of the Ashes where he could just amass 95 runs from 10 innings at a dismal average of 9.50.

Looking at his form in the T20 World Cup, where he was the second-highest run-scorer, a resounding comeback against Broad could be expected in Down Under.

2) Joe Root: 1694

The current England Test captain played his first Ashes game at the Lord’s in 2013 Ashes and slammed 180 in the second innings to bag the player of the match award as England won by 347 runs.

Root will be looking for his first hundred on Australian soil as he has accumulated 570 runs from 17 innings at an average of 38 with six fifty-plus scores.

In his last tour in Australia in 2017/18, the England skipper had made 378 runs including five half-centuries.

1) Steve Smith: 2800

Smith is not just a household name for Australia in Test format but also a bane for the England bowlers.

Definitely, James Anderson & co will feel the pressure to stop Australia’s lynchpin, someone who has tormented them in the last two Ashes with 687 in 2017/18 and 774 in 2019.

Smith needs 423 runs to surpass Allan Border as the third-highest run-scorer in Ashes of all time.

Smith was also the captain of Australia when they thumped England 4-0 in the 2017/18 Ashes series and recently was appointed deputy to Pat Cummins.
