ICC World Test Championship 2021-23: Updated Points Table After 1st Test Between India And New Zealand

India have retained the No. 2 spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 points table after the draw in the first Test match of the two-match Test series against Kane Williamson-led New Zealand National Cricket Team on Monday, November 29 at Green Park, Kanpur.

In the ICC World Test Championship, 2021-23 teams will be ranked based on the percentage of points. A winning team gets 12 ( 100%) points for a win, 6 (50%) points for a tie and 4 (33.33%) points for a draw. Also for slow over-rates teams will lose one championship point for each over short.

Talking about the India vs New Zealand first Test in Kanpur, India won the toss and elected to bat first. Ajinkya Rahane was leading the team as Virat Kohli was rested for the game.

Opener Rohit Sharma was also rested and KL Rahul got injured before the match and Shubman Gill and Mayank Agarwal opened the innings for the team.

The top performer for India in the first innings was debutant middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer who smashed a century. Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja also smashed half-centuries. From New Zealand, Tim Southee bagged an amazing 5-wicket haul and they managed to restrict India at the score of 345 runs.

In New Zealand’s first innings Openers, Tom Latham and Will Young scored 95 and 89 runs respectively. Also, Indian spinner Axar Patel bagged his 5th Test 5-wicket haul and New Zealand were restricted at 296 runs.

When India came out to bat in the second innings the top-order batting unit failed. However, Shreyas Iyer and Wriddhiman Saha fought very well and helped India score 234 runs and India decided to declare after posting the target of 284 for New Zealand.

On the last Day, New Zealand needed 280 runs to win with 9 wickets remaining. Opener Tom Latham was the sole good performer for New Zealand in the second innings as he managed to score a brilliant half-century.

In the end, Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel kept defending one ball after another and the match ended in a draw and New Zealand were at 165/9.

India and New Zealand shared 4 points each as the first test at Kanpur ended in a draw.
