Former India National Cricket Team player Rohan Gavaskar has said that the modern-day batting great Virat Kohli’s half-century against a team like Hong Kong would have been taken for granted in the past.

The 33-year-old performed very well with the willow in India’s 40-run win over Hong Kong on Wednesday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Kohli scored good 59 runs off 44 balls, including 1 four and 3 sixes, against the Nizakat Khan-led side and he also had a brilliant 98* runs partnership with Suryakumar Yadav.

During an interaction on the Sports 18 show ‘Sports Over the Top’, former India cricketer was asked about his thoughts on whether Kohli’s half-century was a one-off or if he has started to return to form. He replied by saying that judging Kohli’s form based on his performance against a weaker opposition like Hong Kong is not fair “to the ability and the kind of performances that Virat has done in the past”. He stated:

“The fact that we have to talk about Virat Kohli getting a half-century against Hong Kong, I don’t think we do justice to the ability and the kind of performances that Virat has done in the past.

“A half-century against Hong Kong is something that we would have taken for granted in the past when Virat is going out to bat, this is with all due respect to Hong Kong, because this is what he has done against most teams.”

Gavaskar further said that he is hopeful that Kohli’s half-century against Hong Kong is not a one-off thing and it’s actually a sign of the modern-day legend returning to form. He said:

“As any Indian cricket fan will tell you, no one is hoping that’s a one-off. We are hoping that’s Virat getting back into form because we have seen what Virat can do, what Virat is capable of. He has shown glimpses.

“He has gone through a little bit of a rough patch, he has gone through a terrible phase, and as you said, this is hopefully a sign of things to come. Going into that World Cup, we need players like Virat, who are world beaters, to be in the best form of their lives.”
