Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who coached the Delhi Capitals in the IPL during Rishabh Pant’s captaincy, stated that he was surprised that the left-handed batsman was not picked for India’s playing 11 against Pakistan on Sunday.
India and Pakistan will meet again in the Super4 stage of the Asia Cup 2022 on September 4.

The way Pant was benched surprised the cricketing world, even if it must be recognized that there is still some doubt regarding who will play against Pakistan on Sunday. At any rate, some of them were.
Ricky Ponting, the mentor, and coach of the Delhi Capitals is an example of someone well-versed in Pant.
“I was pleasantly surprised. To be honest, there was considerable discussion on social media platforms leading up to the game about which way they would go since I believe they required the sixth bowling option,” Ponting told ICC Review.

“Having worked with him for a long time now with the Delhi Capitals and being a franchise captain, he (Pant) is honestly one of my favorites.” I have a soft spot for him that most people don’t, but for all the right reasons because I know his character” Ricky Ponting told ICC Review.
“I know his skill set, and I know how much he wants to do well and win games – whether for the Delhi Capitals or India.”

Despite the disappointment, Ponting feels Pant would eventually make his way back into the India XI.
“I do not think it will be long before we see him back in there,” Ricky Ponting said.

“However, when you look at the balance that India had on that side, you realize it is challenging to leave Karthik out because Dinesh is in career-best form by a huge margin.”
