Australia National Cricket Team players have donated their prize money from the recent Australia tour of Sri Lanka 2022 to SL appeal to support the people affected by the economic and political crisis in the island nation.

The Australia tour of Sri Lanka 2022, which was Australia’s first tour of Sri Lanka since 2016, consisted of a three-match T20I series, a five-match ODI series and a two-match Test series. Australia won the T20I series by 2-1, Sri Lanka won the ODI series by 3-2 and the Test series ended in a 1-1 draw.

UNICEF Australia CEO Tony Stuart, while talking about the players’ decision to donate their prize money to Sri Lanka, said:

“Last year Australian cricketers got behind India in its time of crisis during the peak of the COVID-19 Delta wave and we thank them for again giving generously to help Sri Lankans impacted by the current crisis.

“Australia has a strong bond with Sri Lanka that goes beyond the match days and this donation is gratefully received to support the long-term well-being of Sri Lanka’s families.”

Notably, last year the Test captain Cummins and Cricket Australia (CA) donated $50,000 for oxygen supplies to India during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Australia National Cricket Team led by red-ball captain Pat Cummins and white-ball captain Aaron Finch have decided to donate A$45,000 to the Sri Lanka appeal and the funds will go towards UNICEF’s programs to support nutrition, healthcare, safe drinking water, education, and mental health services for 1.7 million vulnerable Sri Lankan children in need.

Australia National Cricket Team Test captain Pat Cummins, who is a UNICEF Australia ambassador, said that it was an easy decision for the players to donate the prize money.

“It was very clear to us how much day-to-day life for Sri Lankans is being impacted,” Cummins said.

“When the team saw what was happening it was an easy decision to donate our prize money to UNICEF, who have been in Sri Lanka for more than 50 years supporting the needs of children and families.”

The limited-overs Aaron Finch felt warmly welcomed by the Sri Lankans and was also hopeful that the tour had “helped lift their spirits in some small way”.
