The attempts to stop using the name of the legendary Indian cricketer to signify a run out at the non-striker’s end have caused a shocking rift among Vinoo Mankad‘s family.

Since Vinoo Mankad memorably ran out Bill Brown during India’s 1947–1948 tour of Australia, the Mankad has become a part of the cricket lingo.

Vinoo Mankad’s Family Not On Same Page

In reply to Australian pundits calling for the name to be changed, Vinoo Mankad’s grandson Harsh, who used to be India’s top-ranked tennis player, recently stated that he was “always delighted to see my grandfather being remembered.”

“I feel it to be a great honour for our name to be associated with a cricketing term,” Harsh said.

“I’d love to see the ‘Mankad’ or ‘Mankading’ stay and keep alive his memories and legacy as a great competitor and sportsman deeply respected and admired by everyone I’ve met and those who knew him and experienced life with him.”

But not every member of the Mankad family agrees with Harsh. Vinoo’s grandson Rahul Mankad’s widow, Nishita Rahul Mankad, has spoken out against the word.

“(That’s) my nephew’s personal view, not that of the Mankad family,” she said.

“My late husband Rahul Mankad fought hard to have the ICC remove the family name from this form of dismissal, as it is inappropriate for a legitimate form of dismissal to stigmatise a legendary cricketer.”

Vinoo Mankad Was Right According To Sir Don Bradman

When Brown was fired, Australian team captain Sir Don Bradman, who was near the striker’s end, believed Mankad was completely right.

“For the life of me, I cannot understand why (anyone) questioned his sportsmanship,” he would later write in a memoir.

“The laws of cricket make it quite clear that the non-striker must keep within his ground until the ball has been delivered. If not, why is the provision there which enables the bowler to run him out?

“We considered it quite a legitimate part of the game.”

The dismissal is entirely permitted by the rules of the game, which have been repeatedly clarified to reflect it since they were originally documented in the early 1800s.

The Mankad was transferred from Code 38 under the “run out” portion of the cricket law book to Law 38 under the “Unfair Play” section as of October 2022 by Marylebone Cricket Club, the sport’s custodians, and lawmakers.

However, it has remained a contentious topic, as Melbourne Stars captain Adam Zampa discovered last week when he sought to run out Tom Rogers of the Melbourne Renegades.

However, the question of whether it is in the spirit of the game continues to be debated, and many contend that a batter should be informed of their infractions before a run-out attempt is made at the non-striker’s end.
