The eighth match of the 2021 edition of the Big Bash League will have Sydney Sixers take on Hobart Hurricanes at Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday. The defending champions have continued to exhibit outstanding performances this season as well.
The Sydney Sixers have won both the games they have played so far in the competition. 2 wins in 2 matches meant Sydney Sixers are currently positioned at the top of the points table with 2 wins in 2 matches.
Hobart Hurricanes, on the other hand, are languishing at sixth on the table. They have played one match thus far in the tournament and suffered a defeat. Notably, they played their first game against Sydney Sixers only.
The upcoming game on Saturday will be the second time when both these two sides will take on each other. In their last encounter, Sydney Sixers captain, Moises Henriques played one of the best knocks of his BBL career.
Despite wickets falling at one end, Henriques backed himself and hit wonderful shots all around the ground. He scored 73 runs off just 48 balls, a knock which included 6 fours and 2 sixes. There was little contribution from the other batsmen and Sydney Sixers thus posted 144 in the first innings. Hobart Hurricanes bowled well to restrict Sydney to, perhaps, a below-par score.
Henriques played a good knock but the bowlers didn’t allow any other batsmen to get going. Thomas Rogers, led with the ball as he picked 3 wickets for 24 runs in 4 overs. Nathan Ellis also bowled well for his 2 for 34 in 4 overs. Besides, Lamichhane ( 1 for 24) and Joe Paris ( 1 for 26) also bowled crucial spells.
In pursuit of the total, Hobart’s openers, Mathew Wade and D Arcy Short didn’t make the best of the starts. Both struggled to get going against disciplined bowling from the Sydney Sixers. Darcy Short, perhaps, played the worst knock of his T20 career as he wasted 36 deliveries for his 21. Wade for the first one to depart after scoring 20 off 18 balls.
Peter Handscomb and Caleb Jewell then led the recovery with some brilliant shots. However, Jewell too got out after scoring 20 off 11. Handscomb found little support from the other end but he kept playing his short. He took the match till the very last over of the innings. However, with 19 needed in the final over, Handscomb couldn’t take his team home.
He got out on the second last ball of the final over after scoring 47 off 31. Hobart Hurricanes fell 14 runs short in the end. Hobart would look to take revenge on Saturday and register their first points in the tournament. However, given how the Sydney Sixers are playing at the moment, it looks like they will register their third consecutive win on Saturday.
