Over the years, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has delivered in multiple roles for the Indian team. He played the role of the captain, wicketkeeper, and most importantly, a deadly finisher who has rescued India many a time. Any team will be blessed to have a player with half of the abilities that MS Dhoni has and India has been lucky to have the man from Ranchi.

Sure, there can never be another ‘Captain Cool’ but one can learn from the career of Dhoni and try to replicate his approach to the game.

Let’s take a look at the players who can become the next Dhoni.

Just like his idol, Ishan Kishan is from the state of Bihar and is the current captain of the Jharkhand team in the Ranji trophy. He is an attacking top-order batsman and led the Indian Cricket Team at the Under-19 World Cup in 2016.

Kishan, along with Rishabh Pant, are the potential heirs to Dhoni’s throne, as they have the same kind of attacking stroke-making and a fearless approach to batting

Ishan Kishan is an emerging wicketkeeper-batsman and opener for the Indian team. He could not grab a spot in T20 World Cup 2022 but was part of the last edition. He has played 19 T20I games so far and slammed 543 runs at an average of 30.16.

At a strike rate of 131+, the left-handed batsman has also slammed 4 fifties in the shortest format. Being a hard-hitting batsman, Kishan will be a good choice to replace Rohit Sharma as an opener.

Sanju Samson first caught everyone’s attention when he represented the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2013, where many pundits and cricket experts recognized his potential. Even the legendary leg-spinner, Shane Warne, once touted him as the next big thing in Indian cricket.

In the ongoing ODI series against South Africa, the wicketkeeper-batsman has been consistent with the willow. The 27-year-old scored a blistering 63 balls 86 in the 1st ODI albeit in a losing cause, but then showed poise to score a steady 36 balls 30 and help the Men in Blue win the contest and level terms.

Samson made his T20I debut long back in 2015 but due to inconsistent performances and others grabbing opportunities, and hence could not play enough games. In 15 T20Is so far, he has amassed 296 runs at an average of 21.14. In 7 ODIs, he has slammed 176 runs at an average of 44.0 and 1 fifty.

While the others on the list have not made their debut for India in Test cricket, Rishabh Pant has already made an impact in the longest format of the game and, in a short span of time. He scored a century in India’s fifth Test against England in England – a field, which no Indian wicket-keeper could achieve before him.

Even the great MS Dhoni has not scored a Test century outside Asia, but Pant managed to do it only in the third Test match of his career. His potential, combined with a fearless approach to the order, makes him a dangerous customer for the opposition.
