India ended 2022 number two on the WTC points table. They also ranked second in the ICC Test rankings with 3690 points. After starting 2022 in a precarious position losing back to back Test matches, the side beat Bangladesh 2-0 in a Test series to stay alive in the WTC race.

He lost two Test matches as a skipper against South Africa. He then managed to win two Tests as captain in the series against Bangladesh. Despite winning the Test match, his contribution in terms of runs was negligible.
