As A Captain, I Would Expect More Yuzvendra Chahal - Parthiv Patel Says Leggie Will Be Under Pressure Against West Indies
Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel opined that leg-spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal, will be expected to take wickets in the middle-overs, something he failed to do against South Africa.
Chahal took two wickets in three matches against the Proteas and was extremely ineffective at maintaining the economy as well. With Ravi Bishnoi and Rahul Chahar in the fray, his chances are running thin.
“You expect Chahal to take wickets in the middle overs but he wasn’t as successful. As a captain, I would expect this from Chahal because he’s playing for so many years. These are wickets where there is spin and bounce (talking about the ODI series in South Africa),” Parthiv told on Cricbuzz.
“If he doesn’t take wickets, there are other players” – Parthiv Patel
Parthiv also asserted that India has a couple of leg-spinning options who can take over from Chahal if he fails to perform. Even Kuldeep Yadav was recalled to the squad for the West Indies series, which came as quite a surprise to many.
“Chahal will be under pressure. If he doesn’t take wickets, there are players like Rahul Chahar who was picked ahead of him in the T20 World Cup, and Ravi Bishnoi as well, who has been producing consistent performances.“
“I believe both, India and Chahal will have to think about this because his main role in the team is to take wickets in the middle overs. If he doesn’t even bowl 10 overs on a wicket that assists spin (Cape Town ODI), it shows that he didn’t meet the expectations,” Parthiv added.
The series against West Indies begins on February 6 and will be played across two venues.
