England against the run of play declared the innings on 393-8. It was quite astonishing to see that England declared when the star batter Joe Root was at the crease. Joe Root could have added other 30-odd runs as Ollie Robinson can also smash lusty blows at the back end of the innings.

England’s ‘Bazball’ approach was tested but Joe Root stood tall from one end. The former skipper Joe Root was seen playing a lot of innovative shots and at the same time frustrated the bowlers by rotating the strike on a consistent basis.

English fans would be delighted after the resurgence of Zak Crawley at the top of the order. Crawley scored 61 runs in 73 balls and struck 7 fours. It didn’t look as if Jonny Bairstow was playing competitive cricket after August 2022 as he scored 78 runs in 78 balls and struck 12 fours.

I didn’t like the declaration – Kevin Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen was having an interaction with Sky Sports and was not happy after the Ben Stokes led side declared the innings in the middle of the match. Kevin Pietersen took a unique stance and stated that England should have posted a score around 400 or 450 before having a crack at the opposition.

‘I didn’t like the declaration, I was always told to get to 400 in the first innings of a Test match, even 450. Maybe I’m being too critical, I don’t know. We’ll see. ‘I didn’t see it coming. Two or three years ago, there would not even be a hint of a declaration. But you can’t be too surprised with this team,” said Kevin Pietersen.

“But I’m a little bit surprised because of how flat this pitch is. We saw Australia bat for a few overs and it didn’t miss the middle of the bat,’ he added.

I wouldn’t have declared – Michael Vaughan

Michael Vaughan pointed out that declaring the innings could have been risky as the game is moving very quickly. Michael Vaughan heaped praise on Joe Root as the batter smashed a fine ton when the middle order fell like a pack of cards except Jonny Bairstow.

“I wouldn’t have declared. You just don’t know what is going to happen. But England are trying to send a message no team has ever done before. I applaud Ben Stokes I think this is the first time in my lifetime that England have sent the first punch. But I – as a captain – would’ve wanted a few more runs, especially with Joe Root out there,” said Michael Vaughan.

‘That has been one day of Test cricket but it feels like three or four. The game has already moved forward pretty fast. It was a masterclass from Joe Root, who is in my opinion, England’s greatest ever. A brilliant hundred. On the pitch that they’ve seen and the way that England have batted, if one or two of the Australians don’t do what Joe Root did today, I’d be very surprised,” he added.

I did like the declaration – Nasser Hussain

Nasser Hussain was seen interacting with Sky Sports and backed England’s declaration. Nasser Hussain though said that England would have wanted to get rid of David Warner as the left handed batter doesn’t have encouraging numbers against the veteran speedster Stuart Broad.

“I did [like the declaration] because I wanted to see Warner against Broad. I understand the moment, the drama. Stokes was always gonna do that this evening,” said Nasser Hussain.
