With David Warner’s poor form in Tests continuing, Australia skipper Pat Cummins has hinted that the veteran opener could face the axe from the playing eleven for the fourth Ashes Test against England.

Australia will be looking to bounce back after suffering a three-wicket loss in the recently-concluded third Test at Headingley. And it could force them to make a few changes to their playing eleven. David Warner’s place in the team is being questioned by many for quite some time now. The senior batsman has failed to perform well in Tests in recent months.

He failed to do well in the third Test too, falling both times to his nemesis Stuart Broad. In the first innings, the left-handed batsman was dismissed by Broad for just 4 runs as he edged the delivery to Zak Crawley in the slip cordon. In the second innings, Warner was on just 1 when he edged Broad again to Crawley in the slip.

Broad has now dismissed Warner as many as 17 times in Tests. And the southpaw is showing little signs of improving his record against the England veteran. His latest failure is bound to make the Australian team management contemplate the possibility of dropping him.

Pat Cummins on David Warner’s place in the team:

With the Ashes on the line, Pat Cummins has made it clear that Australia won’t hesitate in choosing the best possible playing eleven for the fourth Test in Manchester. Speaking after the loss in the third Test, the star pacer refused to confirm Warner’s participation in the upcoming game and said that Australia would keep all of their options open.

Speaking after the match, he was asked if Warner could be dropped to accommodate Cameron Green and the in-form Mitchell Marsh in the side. In reply, Cummins said:

“We’ll keep all our options open. We’ve got nine or 10 days now, so we’ll take a deep breath.”

“We’ll go away for a few days but everyone comes back into it. Greeny should be fit for Manchester, we should have a full roster. So we’ll have a look at the wicket, have a chat and work out the best XI,” said Cummins.

Meanwhile, England chased down 251 runs to keep alive their hopes of winning the Ashes for the first time since 2015. Australia could retain the Ashes if they draw the fourth Test. On the other hand, a win in the remaining two Tests will see them win an Ashes series in England for the first time since 2001.
