On Friday, May 9, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced the suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for a period of one week.
This development comes a day after the Indian Premier League 2025 match between the Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals was called off midway at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala due to the tensions at the border.
"Decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council"
In an official statement, the BCCI stated that the decision to suspend the competition has been made after due consultation with all stakeholders. BCCI also highlighted the 'unwarranted aggression' by Pakistan’s armed forces after Operation Sindoor in their statement.
"The remainder of ongoing #TATAIPL 2025 suspended with immediate effect for one week. The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after due consultation with all key stakeholders following the representations from most of the franchisees, who conveyed the concern and sentiments of their players, and also the views of the broadcaster, sponsors and fans.
"While the BCCI reposes full faith in the strength and preparedness of our armed forces, the Board considered it prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders," the BCCI statement read.

The remainder of ongoing #TATAIPL 2025 suspended with immediate effect for one week.
"At this critical juncture, the BCCI stands firmly with the nation. We express our solidarity with the Government of India, the Armed Forces and the people of our country. The Board salutes the bravery, courage, and selfless service of our armed forces, whose heroic efforts under Operation Sindoor continue to protect and inspire the nation, as they lead a resolute response to the recent terrorist attack and the unwarranted aggression by Pakistan’s armed forces."
What is happening between India and Pakistan?
On April 22, 2025, five terrorists attacked tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, and killed 26 innocent people. The Pakistan link was found in this attack, and India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, to take revenge for the lives lost.
India's armed forces struck nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as they targeted facilities linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
Despite India just targeting terrorist camps, major military tensions escalated between India and Pakistan, and on May 8, Pakistan launched an attack on the areas near Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab.
New schedule and venues for IPL 2025 to be announced soon
So far, 58 matches have been held in the Indian Premier League 2025, and 12 group stage matches are remaining, along with the Qualifier 1, Qualifier 2, Eliminator, and the grand final.
In case the tournament begins after a week, several doubleheaders are expected to be played. However, it all depends on the situation near the border.
"Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders," BCCI stated.
