A day after champion Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the second-fastest Indian spinner to claim 400 Test wickets, the Tamil Nadu cricketer left his fans scratching their head with a series of cryptic tweets that he posted on his official account.

In a thread that consisted of three tweets, Ashwin gave a reference to ‘outbound marketing’ stating that we live in an era where marketing agencies sell their ideas and products as if to hammer the point their customers are not allowed to think on their own.

The legendary Indian cricketer further added that it’s okay to have an opinion even if it’s against the majority as long as we know that the opinion is our own and that it has not been sold to us by an outsider.

“Products are sold using various marketing strategies and that’s an accepted practice! We now live in an era where ideas are also being sold to us and it’s a classic example of ‘outbound marketing’, however, I would like to add that buying ideas being sold to us is like telling us  ‘you can’t think on your own’ and here we will teach you how to think and also help you think the way we want you to think. After having played the game at this level for a decade, I can safely say that ‘As long as we are going to buy it, they will shove it down our throat’,” wrote Ravichandran Ashwin.

“Finally. We can always have and stand by our opinions even if it’s against the majority as long as we know that it is our own and not the one that’s been sold to us! ‘The choice is always ours’,” he further added.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s cryptic tweet was open to interpretation. And, some of the social media users came up with their own understanding of what his tweets meant. Some thought that his tweets were an indirect jibe at former cricketer Yuvraj Singh, who had posted a distasteful tweet on the day the off-spinner became the second-fastest to 400 Test wickets. Yuvraj had taken to Twitter after India’s ten-wicket win where he took an indirect jibe at Ashwin, claiming that Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble would have taken 800 and 1000 Test wickets had they bowled on the kind of the pitches that have been dished out in the last two Tests against England.

However, a media agency that goes by the name of ‘India Ahead News’ went as far as putting a spin on Ravichandran Ashwin’s words, claiming that his tweets were in direct reference to the tweets that Indian cricketers had done after Rihanna and Greta Thunberg’s tweets against Farm Laws.

Not one to get let anyone spin his tweets to suit their narrative, Ashwin proceeded to hit back at the media house, suggesting them to not politicize his tweets.

”This is exactly what I said in my series of tweets!! I don’t want any of you all to try and give meaning to or politicise my tweets. My profession is cricket and that’s what I have spoken about, please don’t add flavour to skew minds,” wrote Ravichandran Ashwin.
