India skipper Rohit Sharma expressed his satisfaction with the team’s preparation for their first match of the ICC World Cup 2023. Rohit Sharma admitted that young opener Shubman Gill is unwell but has not been ruled out for the upcoming match against Australia.

Shubman Gill is reportedly suffering from dengue, which raises doubts about his participation in India’s tournament opener. Gill was the highest-ranked batter for Team India in the 50-over format. Ishan Kishan is likely to replace him at the top of the order against Australia.

We Have Come Well Prepared – Rohit Sharma

Speaking at the press conference ahead of the match against Australia, Rohit Sharma confirmed that the medical team is closely monitoring Shubman Gill’s condition.

“The mood is pretty good. We have come well prepared and quite confident. Shubman Gill is not 100%. He is not fit but sick. We are monitoring him. He is still not ruled out,” Rohit told reporters.

Shubman Gill is expected to make his World Cup debut against Australia in Chennai on Sunday, October 8. He is a crucial batter for India, coming off brilliant performances in India’s triumphant Asia Cup 2023 campaign and the bilateral ODI series win over Australia.

I Feel For Shubman Gill – Rohit Sharma

The 36-year-old expressed concern for Shubman Gill’s health and wished for his speedy recovery from a high fever.

“It doesn’t worry me but I feel for him. With me being a human being first, I want Shubman to get well soon. He’s a young guy, fit body so hopefully he’ll recover quickly,” Rohit added.

We Will Focus On Our Strengths – Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma acknowledged Australia’s strong track record in World Cups but stressed that India will concentrate on their strengths and adapt to the conditions.

“What we have done in past will not matter. Australia being Australia, we know how they step up in World Cups. We will focus on our strengths and assess the conditions and how you want to bat and what line and lengths to bowl. Everything is going to be crucial.”
