Ishan Kishan scored his fourth consecutive fifty-plus score in ODIs as he scored 82 off 81 balls against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 match. Kishan who walked out to bat after the fall of Shreyas Iyer’s wicket at number five, played perhaps the most important innings of his ODI career. His score resembled Virat Kohli’s score that he scored against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup last year.

India were 66/4 when Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya got together and for the next almost 20 overs batted India out of trouble. He added 138 runs with Hardik Pandya who batted with responsibility as well. It was Kishan’s first innings at number five and the southpaw showed his class.

The wicketkeeper-batsman hit nine fours and two sixes and scored at a strike rate of over 100. He needed to weather the storm initially and then he got into his groove. He paced his innings beautifully hitting the big shots and rotating the strike. This is how X reacted to his innings which was a crucial one for India.

Kishan was struggling to score his final few runs as he started getting cramps. In an effort to score quick runs as he was feeling the pain, Kishan fell to Haris Rauf. What is interesting so far in this Indian innings is that they have lost all their wickets so far to pace. On the other hand, they looked at ease against the Pakistan spinners and that was the period when they looked at ease and scoring runs.

Heading into this game, there was a lot of debate regarding Kishan’s batting position. However, he was looked at as Rahul’s replacement and thus batted at the batting position where Rahul would have batted.

India and Pakistan have faced each other 13 times, with India leading the race with 7 wins, while Pakistan have 5 wins next to their name. The last time Pakistan won in ODIs against India were in the 2017 ICC Championship Trophy final.

Pakistan have already won their first game against Nepal and need one more win to advance to the Super 4s. Meanwhile, this is India’s first game of the campaign and a must-win one.
