Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer believes that the extra batsman is a must in South Africa and suggested India go with 7 batters and 4 bowlers combination featuring the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami.

The India tour of South Africa is scheduled to begin from December 26 at the SuperSport Park, Centurion and India will play three Tests and three ODIs in the tour. This is the first time India will be touring South Africa after 2017-18 which the Proteas won by 2-1.

Meanwhile, Jaffer highlighted that in their last South Africa tour in 2018 the Indian team managed to score over 250 runs only once in six innings and that was the reason behind India’s loss in the series. He  stated on Koo:

“India made 250+ only once in six innings in SA in 2018. And that’s why we lost the series despite taking 20 wickets in all 3 tests. Extra batter is a must in SA. I’d go 7+4 with Bumrah, Shami, Siraj, and Ashwin being the 4 bowlers.”

Wasim Jaffer added that batting has been India’s problem in red-ball cricket as the bowling attack is ” first-class”. He stated:

“I have been saying that if India scores 400 plus, it is more likely that it will win matches. Our bowling attack is first class. The challenge is for the batters to put scores on the board. That’s been the problem.
