Brian Lara has joined the West Indies test team as the team’s performance mentor ahead of the Test series against India. The two-Test match series will be kicking off in Domica On July 12. The second Test will be played in Trinidad from July 20-24.

The former Windies skipper joined the team after their ouster from the ICC World Cup 2023 qualifiers. This is the first time that the two-time World Cup champions will not be playing in the ODI World Cup. Losses to Zimbabwe, Netherlands, and Scotland meant that the Carribean team will miss the flight to India.

Windies Test skipper Kraigg Brathwaite spoke about Lara joining the team as the performance mentor. He said that inputs from the former skipper will be invaluable heading into the Test series against India.

“It’s great to have him here. In terms of the conversations we have with him, we always learn and he’s big on planning… on how you are going to score your runs. His advice on situations is great and it will only help the batters,” Brathwaite said in a statement on Cricket West Indies.

Brian Lara previously worked with the team on tours to Zimbabwe and South Africa and the captain said he has a positive influence on the players.

Braithwaite urged the Windies fans to be present at the Roseau in Dominica to cheer their team as they take on India. The series kicks off the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for both teams.

Important To Start Well: Kraigg Braithwaite

“It’s important to start well. We are playing against India, so you know the guys are really looking forward to it. Dominica will host the first Test match, and we call for the supporters in Dominica to come out and support us — but the guys are really looking forward to the first two Test matches of this (WTC) cycle,” he added.

The Indian team has already arrived in the Caribbean and played a practice match in Barbados. The likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also met Sir Garfield Sobers in Barbados on their arrival.
