IND vs WI: Yashasvi Jaiswal On The Verge Of Overtaking Shikhar Dhawan For Mammoth Milestone

Yashasvi Jaiswal became the 17th Indian cricketer to score a Test century on debut as he ended day 2 on an unbeaten 143, taking India to 312/2 at the stumps. He added an unbeaten 72-run stand with Virat Kohli (36).

Jaiswal who resumed his innings unbeaten on 40 went on to add over 100 runs in the day’s play. He first added a 229-run stand with Rohit Sharma (103) to set the platform and later capitalized with some brilliant strokeplay. The Southpaw hit 14 fours in his innings.

Jaiswal faced 350 deliveries for his 143 and overtook Mohammad Azharuddin‘s tally of 322 deliveries for his 110 against England at the Eden Gardens way back in 1984. No one in recent times faced over 300 deliveries in his debut Test match for India.

Rohit Sharma in his Test debut back in 2013 faced 301 deliveries for his 177 against West Indies in Kolkata. The southpaw however is not new to playing long innings. In the 2022-23 Duleep Trophy quarterfinal, the left-hander had faced 321 deliveries scoring 228 while in the final against South Zone setup up the game for West Zone with 265 off 323 balls in the second innings.

In the 2016-17 Vijay Merchant Trophy West Zone match as a U-16 player, Yashasvi Jaiswal faced 374 deliveries scoring 203. In the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy semi-final against Uttar Pradesh, Jaiswal scored back-to-back hundreds in the two innings facing more than 200 balls in the first innings and more than 350 balls in the second innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Eyes To Overtake Shikhar Dhawan On Day 3

Jaiswal is also eyeing to overtake Shikhar Dhawan‘s tally of 187 runs which he scored in his maiden Test against Australia back in 2013. The Southpaw can also get to 200 on his Test debut.

Only seven players have scored 200 or more on their Test debut. In recent times, Kyle Mayers made 201* against Bangladesh and Devon Conway scored 200 against England at Lord’s in 2021.
