The India National Cricket Team, led by Shubman Gill, has given their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2027 hopes a huge boost after beating Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test of the ongoing two-match Test series at Galle on Wednesday, August 19.
Before the Galle Test, they were sitting fifth in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table with a points percentage of 48.15%. The team had very little room for mistakes after a series of poor results under Gill’s captaincy in this cycle.
But India is now back in the race for a place in the WTC Final at The Oval with a massive win over Sri Lanka in Galle. India has eight Tests still left in the current ICC World Test Championship cycle, and they could not afford to lose more than two games if they want to play the final next year.
India’s road to the WTC Final 2027
The India National Cricket Team now needs to make the most of their remaining eight Test matches in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27. Winning at least six would put Shubman Gill and his team in a very strong position for the WTC Final 2027.
If they manage to win all eight remaining Tests, their final points percentage could reach 74.07%, which would put them in an excellent position to finish in the top two.
A points percentage around 60-65% has often been enough to stay in the qualification race. So, India cannot afford multiple defeats from now in their upcoming Test encounters. Amid this, Yashasvi Jaiswal forces Niroshan Dickwella to get out with lucrative IPL offer.
First Target: Whitewash Sri Lanka
India's immediate target should be beating Sri Lanka in the second and final Test in Colombo after their dominant win in the Galle Test. It will be a huge boost if they manage to register a 2-0 series win in Sri Lanka before their tougher New Zealand and Australia assignments.
A big challenge awaits in New Zealand
India will travel to New Zealand for the two-match Test series in November, and conditions could make life difficult for the touring side. They must win at least one Test match on the tour to put themselves in a much stronger position.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy challenge at home
India will be hosting Australia in a five-match Test series at home in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This test series will have a huge impact on the WTC 2025-27 points table.
The hosts must win the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a margin of either 4-1 or 3-1, as it will significantly boost their WTC Final chances.
What if India loses more than two Tests?
If India suffer multiple defeats in their remaining 8 Test matches, their points percentage could fall into the danger zone. At that stage, qualification will not be in their own hands.
India could then need other results to go their way, with rivals dropping points against other teams to make it to the final.
