Chennai Super Kings found themselves at the center of criticism once again from Irfan Pathan, not just for their fourth consecutive loss in the ongoing IPL 2025, but also for their shocking fielding performance against Punjab Kings during their 18-run loss in their recent game in Chandigarh on April 8.
On a night when Chennai Super Kings’ bowling was already under the scanner, their sloppy fielding made things worse, as they dropped catch after catch and let the game slip through their fingers against the Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh.

Fans and cricket experts were left stunned as CSK lost the four chances that could’ve shifted momentum in their favor. After their fourth straight defeat in the ongoing IPL 2025, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan slammed both CSK and PBKS’ poor fielding efforts.

Chennai Super Kings' comedy of errors against Punjab Kings
Notably, Chennai Super Kings’ trouble started right from the first over against the Punjab Kings. Khaleel Ahmed missed an easy return catch as Priyansh Arya got a lifeline and went on to win the match for PBKS with a remarkable hundred—his maiden IPL century.
Then, Vijay Shankar dropped Marcus Stoinis in the fifth over before Arya got the lifeline twice in the game. At the second time, Ravichandran Ashwin missed the chance, and then Mukesh Choudhary let his foot touch the boundary cushion after completing the catch at the long off.
The woes didn’t end there, as the usually reliable Ravindra Jadeja also dropped a catch in the outfield, giving a lifeline to Shashank Singh. CSK’s poor fielding gave Arya and Shashank Singh extra opportunities that they made the most of and helped PBKS to post 219 runs on the board.

Arshdeep Singh was also denied two wickets, as Shivam Dube was dropped by Lockie Ferguson at backward point in the 15th over and then MS Dhoni was dropped by Yash Thakur at backward point in the 19th over, but PBKS managed to restrict Chennai Super Kings to 201 runs to win the game by 18 runs in Chandigarh.
We were sloppy: Stephen Fleming slams Chennai's fielding efforts
Even after the match, Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming expressed his disappointment over his team’s sloppy fielding efforts against the Punjab Kings.
Stephen Fleming said at the post-match presentation, “The game was really lost in the field. I thought we were sloppy... just lacked accuracy under pressure. We were put under pressure by a fine innings, but we’ve got to be better than that. So that’s where the game got away from us. It’s been a frustrating season so far. The catching has been poor, but it was poor from both sides tonight.”
