After Tim Paine stepped down as Test skipper of the Australian team, Pat Cummins is the most favourite option for selectors to lead the team in Test cricket. Tim Paine stepped down as the captain on Friday (Nov 19) after being guilty of a sexting scandal with a former colleague of Tasmania cricket.

The wicketkeeper-batsman stepped down from the role of skipper after he came to know that his inclusion in the 2017 scandal is going to be made public. Paine is accused of sending some inappropriate messages and explicit photos to a female colleague at Cricket Tasmania back in 2017. As the matter has come out in public four years later, the 36-year-old cricketer decided to step down as the skipper.

Pat Cummins Favourite Choice For Australia’s Test Skipper

Since The Ashes 2020-21 is just a few weeks away, the management needs to find a worthy Test captain for the team as soon as possible. Pat Cummins is being seen as the most favourable choice for the role. For instance, Steve Smith is another good option. However, his inclusion in the 2018 sandpaper gate scandal is a big hurdle for his promotion as Test skipper. Smith has served a one-year ban from cricket and a two-year captaincy ban for the same.

Marnus Labuschagne is another Australian player who is a good option. However, with experience of just 18 Test games so far, the 27-year-old is quite inexperienced to lead a team like Australia. David Warner is another worthy contender for Test skipper. However, he is banned from the captaincy for life due to his involvement in the 2018 sandpaper gate scandal.

Hence, Pat Cummins is the top choice that selectors might go with. Cummins, who is also the vice-captain of Australia, is a right-arm pace bowler. Pat Cummins also has backing from teammate Travis Head for the Test skipper’s role, who believes that Cummins will do a fantastic job as Australia’s captain.

“It’s hard to go past (Pat Cummins) at the moment or not give him the opportunity to (lead). He is someone who oozes leadership, not only in the way he presents himself, the way he speaks, the way he goes about things, the way he trains but also when he’s on the field.

“No matter, the conditions, the weather, the situation or game he gives 120 per cent every time. Everyone sees that in Australian cricket. The way he is off the field is unbelievable. He’s well rounded.

“If he does get his opportunity, which I’m sure he will in the future, whatever that may be. I think he will do a fantastic job,” Travis Head told Australian Associated Press.
