Mumbai Indians icon Rohit Sharma has failed to live up to expectations in the ongoing IPL 2025. With only 329 runs from 13 matches and just three half-centuries to his name, Rohit Sharma looks far from his vintage form. Except for the last season, the Hitman has not crossed the 400-run mark in the last four or five seasons.

At 38, most of his cricketing journey is behind the former Mumbai Indians captain and former India opener Wasim Jaffer has boldly said that Rohit must step up as his team is gearing up for the business end of the ongoing IPL 2025, having qualified for the playoffs.

Wasim Jaffer says Rohit Sharma needs to step up in the IPL 2025 playoffs

Mumbai Indians have reached the IPL 2025 playoffs, but they’ll have to compete in the Eliminator on May 30, a do-or-die clash for them. The playoffs will get underway on May 29, with Qualifier 1 at the brand-new Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh.

As MI gears up for the Eliminator, Wasim Jaffer believes that it’s time for the Indian players to take charge for the franchise. Jaffer warned the MI against placing more hopes on Jonny Bairstow, as he will have to adjust to the conditions after playing red-ball cricket in England.

I think the Indian players need to step up: Wasim Jaffer

Wasim Jaffer said on ESPNCricinfo, “I think the Indian players need to step up. You know, you can't expect too much, even though Jonny Bairstow hasn't had a very outstanding IPL in the last few seasons and he's coming from a red ball cricket in seam and swinging conditions in Yorkshire in April and May. So, you know, he hasn't played much white-ball cricket recently, so it could go either way; it's a double-edged sword.”

The cricket pundit further noted that the likes of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Naman Dhir must step up in the crucial upcoming matches, as the franchise aims for the sixth title. Jaffer signed off by saying, “But I think like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Naman Dhir, those are the guys they need to step up in the coming games.”

Rohit Sharma looks disinterested: Ex-India star

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan said that Rohit Sharma lost his spark as he was addressing the poor form of the former MI skipper in the ongoing tournament.

Atul Wassan said on Bails and Banter on the OTTplay app, “He seems to be a bit disinterested; the motivation, the fire in the belly, has satiated.”

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav has smashed a new record for Mumbai Indians by scoring 619 runs in IPL 2025 — the most by any MI player in a single season. Suryakumar set this milestone during MI’s seven-wicket loss to Punjab Kings at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

With this feat, Suryakumar went past Sachin Tendulkar’s 618-run milestone from IPL 2010. This record was not broken for the past 15 years.
