Shoaib Akhtar Looks At Jasprit Bumrah As India's Future Captain, Wants Indian Pacer To Become Vice-Captain For Now

Shoaib Akhtar has backed Jasprit Bumrah to lead India in the future. The former Pakistan pacer feels that Jasprit Bumrah should be made vice-captain at present and groomed for captaincy. BCCI is looking for a new Test captaincy for India currently.

Virat Kohli recently stepped down as India’s Test skipper. Earlier in November 2021, he had stepped down as the T20I skipper. Later, BCCI also removed him as ODI skipper as they wanted the same captain in the limited-overs format. Rohit Sharma is the new skipper for India in ODIs and T20Is.

Jasprit Bumrah Should Be Made The Vice-Captain And Groomed For Captaincy: Shoaib Akhtar

While speaking to Sports Today, Shoaib Akhtar said that Jasprit Bumrah should be groomed as India’s captain for the future. He also said that Jasprit Bumrah should be made vice-captain currently so that he can learn the skills of leadership gradually.

“Why don’t you look at fast bowlers as captain. Kapil Dev was a fast bowler, wasn’t he a great captain? I don’t know why there is this notion that batsmen are more clever than us. For Pakistan, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis have all been captains,” Shoaib Akhtar said.

“A fast bowler always goes for a win. I am not saying that the batters don’t but it is a little different. Jasprit Bumrah should be made the vice-captain and groomed for captaincy. Groom fast bowlers and all-rounders. This trend of thinking that only batters can be captain is wrong,” Shoaib Akhtar further said.

After the ouster of Virat Kohli as Test skipper, Rohit Sharma is highly expected to lead the team in the Tests as well. However, no official announcement has been made by BCCI in this regard. BCCI will announce the new Test skipper next month ahead of the home Test series against Sri Lanka.
