'Temporary replacement' rule announced for IPL 2025; CSK, KKR confirm overseas players' availability

The Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council has decided to bring in a 'temporary replacement' rule for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, according to a report in ESPNCricinfo.

All ten Indian Premier League franchises will be allowed to rope in temporary replacement players for the final leg of the 2025 season, but they won't be allowed to retain those players for the next season.

IPL 2025 to resume on May 17

The ongoing season of the Indian Premier League will resume on May 17 after a one-week suspension due to the cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.

Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad have been finalized as six venues to host the remainder of the 13 group stage matches. Notably, the venues for the four playoffs matches as well as the final on June 3 haven't been announced.

Due to the suspension of seven days, BCCI has been forced to extend the window of the marquee T20 league, and now it clashes with the international calendar.

This has led to several overseas players pulling out of the competition due to international commitments or personal reasons, and even though the majority of cricketers will return to India, the likes of Jake Fraser-McGurk and Jamie Overton won't be available for the remainder of the league.

Some franchises don't have backups in their squad, and they will have to rope in replacement players. According to the original rule, teams can sign replacements in the event of illness or injury, provided it occurs during or before their 12th match of the season. However, the rule has been changed due to the extraordinary situation that occurred in IPL 2025.

IPL 2025 replacement rules "reassessed"

The governing council has informed the franchises that they have "reassessed" and temporary replacements can be signed for the remainder of the Indian Premier League 2025, but those players won't be available for retention for next year.

"Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament," the league said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

"This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement players taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026."

Also, the players who came in as replacements before the 7-day suspension will remain eligible for retention.

CSK, KKR players' availability confirmed

Speaking to PTI, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan revealed that all the overseas players of the franchise, barring Englishman Jamie Overton, will return for the Indian Premier League 2025. He said:

"All CSK foreign players, barring Jamie Overton, are expected to join the squad ahead of IPL resumption."

The two-time champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), are also in a similar kind of situation as they will miss the services of the former England cricketer Moeen Ali, while the rest of the players will be available for selection, as per RevSportz.

Quinton de Kock is set to rejoin the team on Thursday, while Spencer Johnson, Andre Russell, and Sunil Narine are available for selection for the rest of the season.
