Team India spinner Varun Chakravarthy played a crucial role in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 winning campaign, with his impactful performances throughout the tournament. The mystery spinner showcased his humorous side and took a subtle dig at critics who questioned India's 'advantage' in Dubai.
India secured a four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, March 9. Chasing 252, the Men in Blue completed the run chase in 49 overs. Skipper Rohit Sharma scored 76 runs off 83 balls and won the Player of the Match award.
India's Scheduling Advantage Sparks Debate After 2025 Champions Trophy Win
India played all their matches in Dubai during the Champions Trophy, while other teams had to travel between Pakistan and the UAE. This sparked criticism, as teams like New Zealand and South Africa had to endure multiple flights between venues. India stayed in one location throughout the event.
New Zealand had to travel from Pakistan to Dubai for their group match against India, then return to Lahore for their semifinal. The Black Caps came back to Dubai for the final. Meanwhile, South Africa flew to Dubai due to uncertainty over their semifinal location before returning to Lahore the next day.
The Rohit Sharma-led team capitalized on their advantage. They remained unbeaten in the group stage and defeated Australia in the semifinal.

Varun Chakravarthy shared his celebration pictures on Instagram, where he was seen sipping coffee while holding the Champions Trophy in a hotel. He added a cheeky caption: “A lot of distance was travelled to get a taste of this Cup.”

Meanwhile, some fans felt that Varun Chakravarthy's post was also a dig at Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed, who had posted a picture of himself on Instagram dressed in green and white attire with a cup of tea in hand, and he wrote “last cup of Fantastic evening tea," mocking Indian Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman’s case.
A report by The Tribune revealed that New Zealand travelled the most during the tournament. The BlackCaps covered 7,048 km across Karachi, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Dubai. South Africa also travelled across Karachi, Rawalpindi, Dubai, and Lahore, totalling 3,286 km in travel distance.
Varun Chakravarthy Finishes as Joint Second-Highest Wicket-Taker
Varun Chakravarthy finished as the joint second-highest wicket-taker with nine wickets in just three matches. He was a late addition to the squad but proved to be the missing piece in India's bowling attack.
He replaced Harshit Rana in the Group A match against New Zealand and made an immediate impact with a five-wicket haul. As the fourth spinner alongside Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja, he retained his spot in the knockout stages.
The Tamil Nadu-born cricketer troubled batters with his variations and picked up key wickets to help India lift the title.
India ended their 12-year wait for an ICC ODI title with their Champions Trophy 2025 triumph. They last secured the victory in the 50-over format under MS Dhoni in 2013. Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kuldeep Yadav delivered in key moments, but Varun’s consistency gave India a crucial edge.
