The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Saturday (July 1), reprimanded Sri Lanka star Wanindu Hasaranga for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier. He has been reprimanded for his conduct during the match between Sri Lanka and Netherlands in Bulawayo.

Hasaranga played a key role in Sri Lanka’s thrilling win in the low-scoring affair against the Netherlands. With the bat, the allrounder scored crucial 20 runs to help his team post a respectable total of 213 runs after a disastrous start. With the ball, he picked up 2 crucial wickets as Sri Lanka bowled out Netherlands for 192 to win the game by 21 runs.

With so much at stake in the competition, Hasaranga failed to control himself and ended up being reprimanded by the ICC. The incident took place after he was dismissed when he aggressively struck the boundary skirtings with his bat upon returning to the pavilion.

“Following an investigation, Hasaranga was found to have violated Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to the “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match,” stated ICC in a release.

Following the incident and the subsequent sanction, one demerit point has been added to Hasaranga’s disciplinary record. It was his second offense within a 24-month period which means he now has two demerit points. Hasaranga admitted the offense and accepted the proposed sanction put forth by the match referee. Consequently, there was no requirement for a formal hearing to be conducted.

If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, the points are converted into suspension points, leading to a ban. Two suspension points lead to suspension from either one Test match or two ODIs or two T20Is, depending on whichever comes first.
