As Angelo Mathews entered the field, the players formed a guard of honor by raising their bats in a symbolic gesture to acknowledge the veteran all-rounder's remarkable contribution to Sri Lankan cricket as well as the club. Mathews was also quick to acknowledge the gesture from the players.

Here is the tweet:

Before receiving the guard of honor, Mathews also received a memento and a plaque to mark his last Test. In a short interview on the field, the former Sri Lanka captain highlighted the overwhelming support he has been receiving from all over the world before thanking his family and well-wishers.

"Honestly, I can't believe the amount of love I've been receiving from across the world, thankful for all of it. I want to thank my family, my parents, everyone who has been associated with my journey, my school and college, I'm humbled by the love and appreciation.

"Feeling quite special, realizing that I have played over 100 Tests, wearing this Sri Lankan jersey was a dream come true, I've been proud to represent Sri Lanka across all formats of the game," said Mathews.

Angelo Mathews' Test career

Angelo Mathews is retiring from Test cricket as one of Sri Lanka's most decorated cricketers. He made his Test debut in 2009 and did not take long to become an indispensable part of the team. Mathews has played 118 Tests so far and has scored 8167 runs with the help of 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries.

Only Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene have scored more Test runs than him for Sri Lanka. He also led the team in 34 Tests that included the famous win in Headingley in 2014, where he played a decisive knock of 160 runs in the second innings.
