5 Greatest ODI Matches Between India and England Over the Years

India and England have produced some of the most exciting matches in the One Day International (ODI) folklore.

As the men in blue is all set to embark on their crucial England tour, we rewind the clock to revisit five greatest ODI matches between the two countries.

India will play three One Day Internationals against a strong England side who are in fine form. Thus, the visitors will like to be at the top of their game to come good against Eoin Morgan-led team juggernauts.

Let’s take you on the journey of the five Greatest ODIs between India and England over the years.

5. England vs India, 2nd ODI at Nottingham in 1990

India was able to successfully chase a huge total of 281 runs in the second One-Dayer of the three-match series. Yes, a target of 280 odd runs was considered to be massive in those days.

In fact, India had 55 overs to achieve their target. Sanjay Manjrekar, Dilip Vengaskar, and captain Mohammed Azharuddin were able to score half-centuries. Furthermore, the skipper scored a brisk knock of 63 runs off 44 balls.

A young Sachin Tendulkar provided the finishing touches, as he scored a quickfire 31 off 26 balls. India went on to win the match by five wickets and 12 balls to spare. Furthermore, the Men in Blue was also able to clinch the series 2-0 on the England soil.

4. Robin Uthappa was able to Rescue Indian team from Choppy Waters.

India had their backs against the wall in chase of 316 runs in the 6th ODI. With England leading by 3-2 in the seven-match series, it was a must-win encounter for the Rahul Dravid-led team to keep the series alive.

Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly provided a perfect platform to the visitors, as they put together an alliance of 150 runs for the opening stand. However, the Indian team middle-order veered off the track.

Uthappa scored an excellent 47 off 33 balls to rescue the Indian team from troubled waters. MS Dhoni also assisted the right-hander, as he scored 35 runs off 37 balls.

The men in blue was able to keep breathing in the series, as they won by two wickets and two balls to spare. However, India went on to lose that series.

3. Bowlers did a perfect job in defending a paltry score of 204.

Bowlers showed their class.

India was without the services of their talismanic batsman, Sachin Tendulkar. However, India’s skipper Sourav Ganguly was the lone warrior in the Indian innings, as the visitors scored a mundane score of 204 runs.

India was behind the eight ball at the halfway stage. However, Indian bowlers were able to get their team back in the match. Irfan Pathan scalped two wickets, whereas, Ashish Nehra and Harbhajan Singh took three wickets each.

Sourav Ganguly was adjudged the Man of the match for his valiant 90 at the top-order. Dinesh Karthik made his debut in the same match, and he was able to stump England skipper, Michael Vaughan.

2. ICC World Cup 2011 Tied Match.

Andrew Stauss played a brilliant knock.

The eleventh match of the ICC World Cup ended in a tie. It was the fourth time when an ICC World Cup contest ended in a stalemate.

India had put 338 runs while batting first. Sachin Tendulkar scored a brilliant 120 runs to take the hosts to an above par score.

However, England team was equal to the task, as their skipper Andrew Strauss scored a brilliant 158 to take them in touching distance of the total. 14 runs were required in the final over, and Munaf Patel was able to defend two runs off the last ball of the match. Meanwhile, India went on to lift their second World Cup title in 2011.

1. Natwest Final 2002: Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh did the impossible.

It was a brilliant display of Yuvraj and Kaif skills.

The Natwest final of 2002 will go down as the best ODIs between India and England. India was tottering at 146 for five in the huge chase 325 runs.

It was when two young men in Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif united to get Indian over the line.

Kaif and Yuvraj stitched a partnership of 121 runs to rescue the Indian team. India had played some terrific cricket in whole tri-series, and they deserved to win the final. Kaif scored a fine unbeaten 87 runs while Yuvraj smashed 69 off 63 balls.

It was a fine effort from the young Indian players. Furthermore, Sourav Ganguly celebrated emphatically by taking his shirt off at the Lord’s balcony and thus taking his revenge on Andrew Flintoff, who had celebrated similarly in Mumbai.
