The omission of Glenn Maxwell from the ODI squad for the tour of India wasn’t so much debatable since the swashbuckling all-rounder was expected to play an instrumental role in Australia’s World Cup campaign. However, the Victorian fell flat, scraping through to only 176 runs in ten games as the defending champions faced an exit in the semi-final. Yet, Maxwell received backing from Australia’s limited-overs captain, Aaron Finch saying that he can’t be kept from the team for long, considering his prowess in all facets of the game.

Australia’s squad for the three-game ODI series in January against India was announced yesterday. Looking forward to their first ODI series since the 2019 World Cup, the selectors have named a new face in the squad along with recalls to a handful of players. Marnus Labuschagne, based on his terrific red-ball form, is in line to make his ODI debut. There were recalls for Ashton Turner, Ashton Agar, and Sean Abbott, but the selectors wielded the axe on Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis notably.

Glenn Maxwell is a gun player – Aaron Finch

Speaking about Maxwell’s absence from the squad, Finch conceded that he would be disappointed for not making the squad, but condoned the selectors’ decision since he hasn’t got the required runs. Nonetheless, the skipper spoke highly of the impact he can make on any side and remained confident about his return to the fold.

“Obviously he’ll (Maxwell) be disappointed, like everyone who missed out is but at the end of the day he just hasn’t got the runs required of a top order player in one-day cricket recently. No doubt he’ll be back. He’s a gun. A three-dimensional player that can have such a huge impact. It’s just a matter of time, he’ll get some runs and be right back up there in the frame again.” Finch said as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Finch states that door isn’t shut for anyone:

The 31-year old also reminded that the door is open for anyone who comes up with exquisite performances. The Victorian explained Ashton Agar’s inclusion over Nathan Lyon’s by saying that the selectors wanted to try a spin-bowling all-rounder ahead of a specialist spinner in India. He still didn’t rule out Nathan Lyon since he hailed him for his performance in the World Cup and could come in contention in the future.

“Just probably a change in our approach to the spinning all-rounder in Agar as opposed to the medium-pace all-rounder, that’s probably where someone had to drop out and unfortunately that was Nath (Lyon).” Aaron Finch stated.

The tourists play their first game at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on the 14th of January followed by the second and third match in Rajkot and Bangalore on 17th and 19th respectively. The men in yellow emerged victorious in their previous ODI series in India earlier this year, winning by 3-2.
