Ishan Kishan joined an elite list on Monday as he became the 5th batman in the history of the IPL to register a score of 99 during his whirlwind knock against the Royal Challengers Bangalore [RCB] on Monday.
Over the years, we have seen numerous such instances where batsmen have played the innings of their life before either dismissed or remaining stranded on the dreaded score of 99.
Here are other instances where batsmen registered 99 in the IPL:
Suresh Raina v SRH, Hyderabad, 2013- 99* off 52 balls

Suresh Raina displayed why he is called ‘Mr IPL’ during his swashbuckling 52-ball 99 against SunRisers Hyderabad in the 2013 edition of the IPL.
Batting first, CSK had got off to a brilliant start with openers Murali Vijay [29 off 20 balls] and Mike Hussey [67 off 42 balls] accumulating 45 runs in a mere 5.2 overs before Vijay was eventually dismissed caught-behind by Thisara Perera. Enter Suresh Raina.
The southpaw smashed a swashbuckling 52-ball 99- an innings which included 11 fours and 3 sixes- and along with Hussey stitched a 133-run-stand for the 2nd wicket. Raina remained not-out at 99, thus becoming the first-ever batsman to do so in the IPL besides ensuring that CSK posted 3-223 in 20 overs, a target which they eventually defended by restricting SRH to 8-146.
Virat Kohli v DC, Delhi, 2013- 99 off 58 balls
Virar Kohli then proceeded to take the fledgling innings by the scruff off its neck, smashing the Delhi Capitals unit to all corners of the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. Kohli smashed 10 fours and 4 sixes during his knock before he was unfortunately run-out by Rohrer for 99. Nevertheless, the RCB’s skipper’s knock paved way for them to eventually post a match-winning total of 4-183 in 20 overs as Jaydev Unadkat’s 5-wicket-haul ensured DC fell 4 runs short of the target.
Prithvi Shaw v KKR, Delhi, 2019- 99 off 55 balls
Chasing 186 to win, Delhi Capitals needed one of their batsmen to put their hand up and spearhead the run-chase. And, that is exactly what young Shaw did. He took the run-chase by the scruff of its neck, smashing a classy 99 off 55 balls- an innings which included 12 fours and 3 sixes.
Shaw was on the brink of leading his side past the finishing line courtesy his maiden IPL ton but the right-hander was eventually dismissed for 99 by Lockie Ferguson, with Delhi still needing 12 runs in 9 balls. The game eventually ended in a tie?? but Kagiso Rabada’s brilliance in the Super-Over ensured that Prithvi Shaw’s innings did not go in vain as DC beat KKR in a cliffhanger.
Chris Gayle v RCB, Mohali, 2019- 99* off 64 balls
And, the main reason for that was none of Kings XI Punjab batsmen gave support to the burly West Indian swashbuckler. While Chris Gayle scored a whirlwind 99 off 64 balls- an innings which included 10 fours and 5 monstrous sixes- none of his teammates could breach the 20-run mark, with KL Rahul being the second-highest scorer with a 15-ball 18.
Gayle became just the second batsman in the history of IPL to stay stranded on 99 as KXIP posted 4-173 in 20 overs; a total which was easily chased down by RCB thanks to brilliant knocks by skipper Virat Kohli [67 off 53 balls], AB de Villiers [59* off 38 balls], and Marcus Stoinis [28* off 16 balls].

Ishan Kishan vs RCB, Dubai, 2020- 99 off 58 balls

Ishan Kishan became the 5th batman in the history of the IPL to register a score of 99 during his whirlwind knock against RCB on Monday.
Kishan played an innings of his life as he registered his highest IPL score and very nearly took his side home during their run-chase of 202. Ishan Kishan, who was playing his first game of the 2020 season, was the cornerstone behind MI nearly pulling off a miraculous run-chase.
With 17 runs to get off the last 4 balls, the southpaw smashes back-t0-back sixes off Isuru Udana before perishing on the very next ball as he holed out at backward square-leg for 99.
