Sky Sports has confirmed it has signed a multi-year deal to broadcast 60 live matches of the Indian Premier League in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The matches will be on air on Sky Sports and their live digital app. Star India had earlier bought the worldwide media rights for the IPL for a whopping Rs 16, 437 crores for a five year period from 2018 to 2022.

Star India piped Sony entertainment who had broadcasted the league for past the ten years.

Star TV was earlier expected to retain the media rights and launch its Hotstar digital app services in the United Kingdom, but now with Sky having the rights in the land, Star seems to have dropped the idea.

It will also be the first time in ten years that IPL will air on free to air television, as Star TV will be sharing the streaming with the state broadcaster ‘Doordarshan’. The new season of IPL kicks off in 7th April 2018.

With so much money coming in, TV broadcasters are putting their best foot forward to improve the experience for the fans. Star India who has the broadcasting rights for the IPL now will provide Virtual Reality service through its digital and mobile entertainment platform Hotstar.
