Khaleel Ahmed made his ODI debut during the Asia Cup last year and has been on a roll to impress the selectors since then. Though his maiden outing didn’t leave an impact, his stints during the following Windies series kept him upbeat. Such was his performance that the team and the selection committee agreed upon having him on board to Down Under. Even during Australia T2oIs, Khaleel found his mojo – picking three wickets in as many games.
Recently, his below-par show in New Zealand saw him getting dropped for Australia series; but the left-armer is optimistic about performing well and staying in line for a World Cup call.
McGrath’s advice helped me – Khaleel
The lanky youngster spoke on how the inputs from Glenn McGrath helped him gain prominence in Indian cricket. Khaleel Ahmed revealed at the MRF pace foundation, Glenn told him to hit the top of off-stump every time irrespective of the format.
“I also learnt a lot at the MRF Pace Foundation from the great Glenn McGrath and Senthilnathan sir,” Khaleel told Sportstar in an exclusive interview.
“Irrespective of the format, always try to hit the top of off-stump,” McGrath told me, reveals Khaleel.

As the Indian team had been looking for an effective left-arm fast bowler, Khaleel got drafted in the squad. His variety has kept him ahead of the others – inswingers, lethal bouncers, slower balls and a fast yorker. Talking about one of his better performances – 3/13 against the Windies during Mumbai ODI, Khaleel said he enjoyed trapping Samuels.
“I remember Samuels’ dismissal. I bowled him two inswingers and then sent down an outswinger. He nicked,” said Khaleel.
Australia, NZ tour helped him
Doing what he does best – disturbing the balance of the batsmen, Khaleel was successful in attaining results in his favour Down Under. Giving credits to bowling coach Bharat Arun, Ahmed said the gaffer is always encouraging. Furthermore, he added his pace had been his strength going forward.
“I have been clocked at 148 kmph and am consistently bowling at 140. If I can move the ball at that pace, I am bound to cause problems for the batsmen.” Khaleel added.
Not only this, but Khaleel also said if he can perform well during the IPL he can impress the selectors and get in line for a World Cup call.
“I have a good IPL and impress the selectors with the way I bowl, I could be back in contention,” he concluded.
