Ravi Bishnoi was one of the biggest finds for India in the just-concluded ICC U19 World Cup. The leg-spinner lived up to the hype surrounding him and finished the competition as the highest wicket-taker. He picked up 17 wickets at an average of less than eleven.
Ravi Bishnoi was India’s primary wicket-taking option in the middle overs during the tournament. Very few batsmen managed to handle him while he was on a roll as he bamboozled the opposition with his deadly googlies. In the final against Bangladesh, he nearly took India over the line by triggering a collapse.
After Bangladesh raced away to 50 for no loss while chasing 178, Ravi Bishnoi picked up four wickets in no time to reduce the eventual winners to 65 for 4. Bangladesh then went on to recover and won the game by three wickets (DLS method).
All eyes are now on what the future holds for Ravi Bishnoi. There are calls from several quarters to fast-track the youngster in the senior team. Some experts have even said that the highly-talented leggie would soon replace Yuzvendra Chahal. However, veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh thinks otherwise.
The legendary spinner praised Ravi Bishnoi for his performance at the World Cup before saying that the young spinner should enhance his skills. Harbhajan Singh stated that Bishnoi should focus on bowling more leg-spins than googlies.
“Don’t compare Bishnoi with anyone. I would like to see him grow as time goes by. He has done well and now he needs to think how to take a step further that includes how he will perform in the IPL and at the Ranji Trophy level. If he performs consistently there, he will surely be considered. But I would like to see him bowl more leg-spin rather than the googlies, Harbhajan Singh told The Times of India after being asked whether Bishnoi will replace Chahal soon.
“There are not many spinners apart from (Amit) Mishra who have got a good combination of both googlies and leg spin. Bishnoi should become a legspinner who will fox a batsman with his googlies. You shouldn’t be just another bowler who is bowling googlies because your leg-spin is not good enough,” he added.
