Wasim Akram Explains Why He Doesn't Rate Sachin Tendulkar As His Greatest Opponent

For most of the Indian cricket fans, there is no batsmen greater than Sachin Tendulkar and it is pretty much understandable. The legendary cricketer is the most decorated batsman in the history of the game. No other batsmen has scored as many runs and as many centuries in international cricket as Sachin Tendulkar.

The former India batsman scored a staggering 34,357 runs across formats, more than 6,000 ahead of the second-placed Kumar Sangakkara. Sachin Tendulkar retired from the game with an incredible 100 tons to his name. He is also the first batsman to score a double ton in ODIs.

Unsurprisingly, the fans get angry or don’t like it whenever a bowler who faced Sachin Tendulkar does not rate him as his greatest opponent. Well, former Pakistan skipper and one of the greatest bowlers of all time Wasim Akram has also a similar situation in the past.

And he recently explained why he does not rate the Indian legend as his greatest opponent. While calling Sachin Tendulkar as one of the greatest batsmen of all time, Akram stated that he rarely faced the former batsman in Tests and thus it is difficult for him to judge the batting legend.

Sachin Tendulkar and Akram faced each other in only 7 Tests during the 14 years they played together. Akram bowled to a 16-year-old Sachin Tendulkar in his debut series in 1989 and then only had a crack at him 10 years later in 1999.

“No doubt Sachin is one of the greatest of all time. My Indian fans sometimes get frustrated when I give them my reasons (of a different judgment). I played my first Test match against Sachin in 1989 then I played against him in 99. So I didn’t play Test cricket against him for 10 years so it is a bit difficult to judge him as a bowler but as a player he is one of the greats of the game,” Akram told former Pakistan cricketer Tanveer Ahmed in a YouTube interview.
