Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar spoke out in the defence of batter, Virat Kohli, whose lean patch continues across all formats of the game.

Kohli failed to score in both the T20Is against England he played in, and calls for his axing from the T20I team grew louder. Considering he replaced Deepak Hooda, who is in the form of his life, the expectations were high.

I don’t understand when Rohit Sharma does not score runs, no one talks about it. When other batters don’t score runs, no one talks about it. Form is temporary and class is permanent. You are only asking about one player. The kind of template Team India has started, players will be unsuccessful,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

Unfortunately for Kohli, additional failures are likely to end his stint in the shortest format. Several other players including Hooda are hogging the limelight with their performances.

“Give it some time” – Sunil Gavaskar

The Asia Cup is set to take place in Sri Lanka where Gavaskar expects a final assessment to be made. Based on that, the team for the T20 World Cup can be selected, as per the former batter.

We have a good selection committee. There are still two months for the team to be announced and even the Asia Cup is left. You can see the form there and choose your team. Give it some time,” he added.

The T20 World Cup will take place in Australia this October and India has nearly 10 T20Is remaining to prepare and finalise a squad. Kohli will need to pick up his socks if he wants to be on the plane down under.
