Indian spinner Jayant Yadav will replace Washington Sundar in the forthcoming ODI series between India and South Africa. As a result, the off-spinner will stay back in South Africa after the completion of the ongoing IND vs SA Test series. Jayant Yadav is part of India’s Test squad against South Africa.

Washington Sundar was picked up by the selectors for the IND vs SA ODI series. He was one of the all-rounders in the squad with Ravichandran Ashwin and Venkatesh Iyer. However, before departing for the rainbow nation from India, Sundar tested positive for COVID-19. Hence, he was not allowed to board the flight.

Jayant Yadav Will Stay Back In South Africa After Test Series: BCCI Official

Leading Indian daily Times of India quoted a BCCI official as saying that Jayant Yadav will stay back in South Africa after the ongoing Test series and replace Washington Sundar in the ODI squad.

“It has been decided that Jayant will stay back in South Africa. There was very little time to get any other player inside the bubble in Mumbai”, a BCCI official told TOI.

So far, Jayant Yadav has not played any match in South Africa. In the three Tests, the team went ahead with Ravichandran Ashwin as the only spinner as well as an all-rounder. Moreover, with the presence of Ashwin and Venkatesh Iyer in the ODI squad, Jayant Yadav’s inclusion in the playing XI in ODIs is quite doubtful.

Washington Sundar has been out of the field for a long time. The off-spinner got injured ahead of India vs England Test series in August last year. He also did not participate in IPL 2021 UAE leg and ICC T20 World Cup 2021 due to injury. The bowling all-rounder was also absent from India vs New Zealand T20I and Test series in November-December 2021.
