IND vs SA: Sunil Gavaskar Urges Indian Team To Win Johannesburg Test As A Birthday Present To Kapil Dev

Indian batting legend and cricket commentator Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Indian team to win the Johannesburg Test as a birthday present to Kapil Dev. The former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev celebrates his birthday on Thursday (June 6) and turns 63 this year. Sunil Gavaskar feels it will be a wonderful gift by Team India to Kapil Dev if they claim the series victory by winning the Test at Johannesburg.

The IND vs SA 2nd Test at Johannesburg has entered an exciting mode currently. With two more days to go in the match, India and South Africa are battling against each other for victory. India needs 8 more wickets to win while South Africa needs 122 more runs to win the game. The result of the match is highly expected to arrive on day 4, with one of the two teams emerging as the winner of the match.

It Will Be a Wonderful Gift For Kapil Dev From This Indian team, Says Sunil Gavaskar

While speaking about the match on SuperSport, Sunil Gavaskar said that if India wins the match in Johannesburg on Thursday, it will be a wonderful gift for Kapil Dev on his birthday. India have never won a Test series in South Africa. With a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, India win will the series if they defeat South Africa in the ongoing 2nd Test in Johannesburg and script history.

“India have never won a series here. In fact, India have won very few Test matches here. The last time India came here in 2018, they won the one-day series but they lost the Test series 2-1. So this is going to be huge for India,” Sunil Gavaskar said.

“And the way I look at it is, I mean, weather permitting… tomorrow happens to be the birthday in my view of India’s greatest cricketer – Kapil Dev. So I think it will be wonderful gift for Kapil from this Indian team. There are many admirers of Kapil Dev in this team. So from this team to Kapil Dev, that will be a fantastic present,” Sunil Gavaskar further added.

In the match, South Africa is chasing a 340-run target in the final innings. The hosts reached 118-2 in the match at the stumps of day 3, with skipper Dean Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen on strike with 46 and 11 respectively. So far in the 4th innings, Indian pacers have found it difficult to attack the Proteas batting.

Earlier, India batted first and slammed 202-10 with KL Rahul slamming a half-century (50). Marco Jansen picked 4 wickets in the 1st innings while Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier grabbed 3 wickets each. In response, South Africa posted 229-10, taking a 27-run lead. With 266 all-out in the 2nd innings, India managed to establish a 240-run target for the home side in the 2nd innings.
