Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir was highly impressed with the performance of Test captain Virat Kohli on Day 1 of the third Test match against Dean Elgar-led South Africa at the Newlands, Cape Town.
Kohli playing in his 99th Test batted brilliantly and showed a lot of discipline with his shot selection in the match. Despite not getting much support from the other end he stood strong and scored 79 runs off 201 balls before getting dismissed by ace pacer Kagiso Rabada.

Speaking on Star Sports, Gambhir highlighted that Kohli has several times said that a batsman should leave his ego behind when travelling to England and the former opening batsman feels that the Indian captain left his ego behind in the kit bag in the third Test against South Africa.
“Virat has said many times that when you go to England, you should leave behind your ego in India. Today, Virat Kohli left behind his ego in the kit bag and this knock reminds me of his very successful tour of England, where he got beaten many times but left a lot of deliveries outside off-stump,” said Gambhir while reviewing the first day’s play on Star Sports.

Gambhir further added that Kohli left a lot of deliveries outside off-stump keeping his ego aside and didn’t try to attack every ball.
“Today, in the same way, he left deliveries outside off-stump, he got beaten as well but kept his ego with himself. He did not try to dominate the bowlers on every delivery,” he added.
Winning the toss and batting first India managed to score 223 runs with the help of good innings by Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara and at Stumps, on Day 1 South Africa were at 17/1 as they lost the crucial wicket of skipper Dean Elgar and they were trailing by 206 runs with Aiden Markram and Keshav Maharaj on the crease.
