IPL 2022 Retention: 5 Most Surprising Retentions

Ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction, all the old 8 franchises have announced their retentions list for the next season. Each team was allowed to retain a maximum of 4 players. Out of these, there can a maximum of 3 domestic players, 2 overseas players, and 2 uncapped players. A total of 27 players were retained by the 8 teams.

Out of these 27 retained players, 8 were overseas players while 19 were Indian players. Moreover, there were also 4 uncapped players. While some of these retentions were quite obvious to predict, there were also some names that surprised many fans. In this article, we take a glance at 5 most surprising retentions of IPL 2022.

IPL 2022 Retention: 5 Most Surprising Retentions

5. Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep Singh was retained by Punjab Kings for Rs. 4 crore. Although Arshdeep Singh was quite impressive in IPL 2021 hunting 18 wickets in 12 games, he was selected over players like Mohammed Shami and KL Rahul.

Moreover, Shahrukh Khan, who has gained a lot of limelight with his hardcore batting in domestic cricket, was overseen by Punjab Kings for retentions.

4. Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal was retained by Rajasthan Royals for Rs. 4 crore by Rajasthan Royals. Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler were the other 2 players who were retained by the franchise.

While Samson and Buttler were quite predictable to be part of the retentions, Yashasvi Jaiswal was a surprising name. He is an uncapped player who scored 249 runs in 10 innings in IPL 2021 with 1 fifty.

3. Mohammed Siraj

Royal Challengers Bangalore retained Mohammed Siraj in addition to Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell. Siraj was retained for an amount of Rs. 7 crore. While Virat Kohli was an obvious name for retentions, Glenn Maxwell gave a fabulous batting show in IPL 2021 which forced the franchise to retain him.

However, Siraj’s name was surprising as he was picked over the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal, Kyle Jamieson, Washington Sundar, and Harshal Patel.

2. Abdul Samad

Abdul Samad is an uncapped player who was retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs. 4 crore. Samad played 10 innings in IPL 2021 and scored 111 runs at an average of 12.33.

Players like Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jason Holder, and Jonny Bairstow could not make their way into the retentions list. Abdul Samad getting a preference over such players was a surprising thing to watch.

1. Umran Malik

Umran Malik was retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad. The uncapped player was retained for Rs. 4 crore. The right-arm pacer scalped 2 wickets in 3 games in IPL 2021 at an average of 48.0 and an economy of 8.0.

Bowlers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan, T Natarajan- who have also played at the international level- were not retained by the franchise. Umran Malik’s selection over such popular bowlers was definitely surprising.
