Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly said the Indian board is mulling holding IPL 2022 matches in Mumbai and Pune considering the Covid-19 pandemic.

BCCI’s biggest product– the Indian Premier League– has already gone through its share of hurdles as the Indian board had to stage the IPL finals twice in the deserted United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Where will IPL 2022 take place this year?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to decide on a suitable venue for IPL 2022. India and South Africa are the top two choices on the minds of the Indian board.

However, the Indian board doesn’t seem interested in playing their affluent T20 tournament in UAE as they have to pay exponentially to not just stage the tournament, but it also becomes difficult for the franchise to bear the expenses of accommodation.

The BCCI seems to be very keen on holding the entire tournament in a few cities of India like Mumbai and Pune. The Indian board will finalise the venue for IPL 2022 on February 20.

Ganguly said that if COVID-19 does not play a spoilsport then the IPL 2022 will be held in India only this year.

It will be held in India this year, until and unless COVID-19 hits the roof. As far as venues are concerned, we are looking at hosting the matches in Maharashtra – Mumbai, and Pune. We will take a call on the venues for the knockout stages later,” Ganguly told Sportsar.

According to some reports, BCCI has considered South Africa as their backup plan to host the matches of IPL 2022.
