New Zealand skipper and a veteran of the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise in the IPL, Kane Williamson, has backed BCCI’s decision to suspend IPL 2021 indefinitely. Notably, the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League, IPL 2021, commenced in India from April 09 this year amid the rising COVID-19 cases in the country.

At various levels throughout the tournament, people questioned the sanity and rationale behind conducting the tournament. However, the BCCI was clear in its approach until the OCIVD-19 virus breached the bio-secure bubble, and players and support staff started testing positive for the deadly virus.

Kane Williamson Lauds BCCI’s Decision To Suspend IPL 2021

Players and support staff from four different franchises, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, and SunRisers Hyderabad, tested positive for COVID-19. In a span of a couple of days, things turned from bad to worse and the BCCI had to forcefully suspend the entire tournament.

Nw, Kane Williamson, the SRH veteran, has lauded the BCCI to call of the tournament and prevent a major mishap in time.

“Things escalated really quickly over in India and the challenges that way in that part of the world are heartbreaking to see,” Kane Williamson told a press conference.

“From suppose us playing in a bubble with a face, you know clearly it became too great. We were very well looked after in the bubble for the first half of the tournament when things were still intact but clearly there were some breaches,” Kane Williamson further added.

“Things were okay, we were tracking for the most part of the IPL before there was a quick escalation obviously of COVID-19.

“(It was) so tragic and obviously such challenging times for them as a country and bubble breach in cricketing circles and things happened quite quickly after that for us I suppose,” he added.

New Zealand And Australian Cricketers Were Looked After In The Maldives

Notably, the BCCI made arrangements for the New Zealand and Australian cricketers to return home safely via the Maldives. Now, Kane Williamson has revealed the cricketers were looked after in the right manner.

“The boards made plans. Logistically, there were challenges and yes, it happened quickly, which meant a trip to Maldives with a bunch of other IPL cricketers, so it’s been a bit of a whirlwind for all players involved,” Williamson said.

“A lot of people were involved to have us safely get home or where we had to get to. It was quite a group, most of us were there for 13 days or so and we were well looked after and were able to get on to a plane here,” he said.

SRH had one of the poorest outings this season in the Indian Premier League. They were on the last spot when the league came to hold this year as they could manage to win only 1 out of the 7 games that they had played so far. Williamson was appointed the captain ahead of their 7th game and their regular skipper, David Warner, was stripped of the captaincy and even a place in the final XI in their 7th game of the season.
