Ajaz Patel Picks A 5-Wicket Haul In 1st Innings Of Mumbai Test, Becomes The 1st New Zealand Spinner To Reach This Feat In India

Mumbai-born spinner Ajaz Patel has become the first-ever New Zealand spinner to bag a 5-wicket haul in the first innings of a Test match in India.

Indian batting unit looked clueless against the Kiwi spinner Patel in the Mumbai Test and other than Mayank Agarwal no Indian batters were able to deal with the threat of Ajaz Patel.

On the Day 1 of the Mumbai Test, Patel dismissed Indian captain Virat Kohli and Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara on duck. Also, he dismissed Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer and bagged all 4 wickets on the Day.

Meanwhile, he carried his exceptional form to the Day 2 of the Test match and dismissed Wriddhiman Saha and Ravichandran Ashwin in back-to-back deliveries in the 72nd over.

During the match, he completed his 3rd five-wicket haul in Test cricket and became the first-ever New Zealand spinner to take a 5-wicket haul in the first innings of a Test match in India. Also, he has picked all his five-wicket hauls in Asia.

After the end of the first day’s play Ajaz Patel said that it was his day and he was lucky to pick 4 wickets on Day 1 that too in his hometown Wankhede. He said:

“The reality of Test cricket is if you put the ball in good areas for long periods of time, you will see rewards, It was my day today and I am very very lucky to be sitting here with four wickets and I am pretty happy about it. Being in my hometown at Wankhede is quite special for me.”

“Poor Rachin came down with a bug this morning and he fought his way out there throughout the day, so pretty impressive from the young man to be able to stick it out and really shows his character,” Patel added.
