New Zealand lost their third consecutive toss of the series and they got the opportunity to bowl first this time. Pacers Lockie Ferguson and Adam Milne had a very poor outing as they gave away 45 and 47 runs respectively. India with the help of amazing performances of openers Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and lower order batters Harshal Patel and Deepak Chahar were able to post 184 runs on the board.

Chasing the target only Martin Guptill batted brilliantly and all the others failed and the Black Caps lost the series by 3-0.

During the post-match presentation, Kiwi skipper Mitchell Santner said that it was tough to predict the dew situation at the Eden Gardens. He also credited India for performing well throughout the T20I series. He said:

It’s hard to project what the dew is going to be like. They bowled well at the top. Credit to them. I think we were probably a little bit off. We came up against a very good Indian side. They’re tough to beat at home and it showed.”

He added that the way the top order batters of India played, put a lot of pressure on New Zealand. Talking about Kane Williamson, Mitchell Santner said that he is a great player and in his absence, new guys were given the opportunity. He asserted:

The way they batted at the top put us under pressure early. [Kane Williamson] is a great player for us and with the Test matches coming up, it’s understandable that other guys would get a chance and it was an opportunity to see different guys in different roles but India is a very tough side and they showed that again.”

Talking about Martin Guptill who was the only good performer on the batting side of things in the team in the 3rd T20I, Mitchell Santner said that he showed good form. Also, Santer highlighted that Mark Chapman’s amazing batting in the first game was a big positive for New Zealand.

Santer signed off by praising Axar Patel for bowling excellently with the dew around. He elaborated:

Guptill showed good form, Chappy with a fifty in the first game were positives. We’ll reflect on what we did wrong. It can be challenging to bowl with dew, but the way Axar adapted in the second game was good. We don’t get that kind of dew in New Zealand.”
